Hakology Day 15 : Blog Entry

Wow two weeks, time flies when you’re having fun. Knuckling down again today hopefully somewhere near to completing the gqrx video. Spent some of the weekend teaching a friend python and the other half modding my retropie. After spending a few days working on it, its coming together quite nicely. Loads of classics, managed to setup dosbox and test some ports. NB. Some ports seem to FUBAR the card / os / boot. Select carefully when installing them. Once you have a good working SD card F£$%ING image it (*as regularly as possible whilst building your retropie install*) I’ve had to start from scratch a few times, once is annoying but on your fifth attempt it starts to get a little frustrating.
Right coffee and breakfast time.

Ended up having to help a friend out earlier, but back to the computing now. Looks like gqrx is even easier to setup in linux than in windows that makes a nice change.

Notes written and I think i’ve worked out how to record the linux installs. Even managed to get the RTLSDR working in vitual box, but its bit late to start recording.

Hakology Day 13 : Blog Entry

Had a really chilled out day today, think I deserve one after the last twelve days! Visited a friends and took the RPi3 loaded with retropie and about twenty games, not the best games but a selection of a few good old ones. Spent the entirety of the evening chatting about old computers and consoles, by the time I was leaving they wanted me to order another for them, they were that impressed.

Just going to spend a few hours on the SDR and have a quick blast on steam. Hope you lot have a wicked weekend, having fun, doing all the hacks, will be back blogging tomorrow. Peace.

Heavily modding the retropie install.

Hakology Day 12 : Blog Entry

Kettle is on. Coffee to be made. So day twelve begins.

Tunes turned to 11 … its Friday!
Operation pre-weekend tidy up has begun.

Slow start, written up all the notes for the SDR# tutorial, might have a go at recording it later, need to clear some space in the garage for some new equipment arriving soon.

Just had a little jam on my drums .. its been way too long. Great warm up for some FPS.

Right time to do something productive.

Uploading SDR# tutorial, writing up notes in to a new post.

Really quick video showing you how to install and setup SDR# under windows.
Moving on to linux and gqrx next.

Hakology Day 11 : Blog Entry

Just doing some RL stuff will be on this evening. SD card for RPi3 has arrived and whiteboard pens. Multimon-ng running on linux logging data. 🙂

Munching food just about to get down to business.

-SDR# notes / audio / video
-FLEX in multimon-ng
-Test RPi3 (with retropie of course)
-Check corsair ticket.
-Audio working on RPi3 HDMI

Whoot! looks like corsair have updated the ticket. Awaiting RMA confirmation swapping this brown mx for a new spangly red mx keyboard hopefully. That would be most awesome.

Distracted by the internet again! … also reluctant to stop logging POCSAG messages … but I need the dongle.

Rendering vblog

Looking at demodulating FLEX using multimon-ng but IDK if I have the latest version compiled. Time for some updates.

RPi3B vs RPiB there is no comparison, first impressions very impressed!

RPi3 still updating & uploading vblog.

Rebuilt and installed latest version of multimon-ng. Now have FLEX messages demodulating whoot!

Audio working on RPi3 Whoot!!! 😀

Ready to record SDR# tutorial tomorrow.
On mumble with luc, hexon and gir.
Signing off for today, its been fun. 🙂

Worth an update thank you gir for offering to send a RPi zero for hakology to have a play with … can’t wait 😀

Thanks hexon been after this link for a long time … http://playdosgamesonline.com

Hakology Day 9 : Blog Entry

So it begins, late night last night, got the SDR working under windows. Todays goals, get the SDR working under linux and gqrx, look at what I managed to capture in the log and start a video showing how to setup SDR#.

Really don’t want to stop logging messages lol, but I suppose its time to start making notes. Once I can get this running on the RPi ill leave it logging 24/7 for a while so I can analyse the data. Still lots of data being sent that shouldn’t be, names, phone numbers, address information, IP addresses, email addresses, URLs … and I’m sure if I log for long enough the obligatory username and password.

So I can’t show or share any of the data I’m collecting. Hibby just pointed me to (Legal stuff) … even though I can’t share the data I can show you how to demodulate the signals yourself.

Written up notes for SDR# installation.

Executing operation tidy up for recording later also doing a few other chores.

Still tidying 🙁 b/c I’m a messy bugger.

Random picture for today …
Since I’m working on radio stuff here’s my baofeng handset its the uv-5r, a great starting handset for people looking to get in to HAM radio and start learning. I bought one relatively cheap on ebay around £20, before I got my licence so I could scan and listen a little. I’ve some other scanners and sets but ill save those for another day.

meh RL … need to script my house work or hack together some sort of roomba capable of washing up and making tea/coffee on demand.

Chilling out time for a coffee and some food. BBL

A few pages of notes written and a rough idea for an introduction to SDR. Time for a brew and to record / talk through the audio. Will report back in a while.

Useful links:

Captured a little extra audio for the hakology introduction too.

Sleep required.

Woke up after a few hours sleep been doing a little radio research, too early to start the next blog entry, too late to be editing this one hmmm.
No vblog for day nine either will have to make up for it later.

Hakology Day 8 : Blog Entry

Good afternoon hakologists. Late start but lots to do.

Posted ebay stuff, bills to pay, boring stuff. Couple of support calls to make. Will be on soon though.

The amount of profit water, gas, and electricity companies make you’d think they’d have more people staffing the phones. Especially when everyone uses mobiles these days. I hate online payment services much prefer top up cards or direct payment. Finally got through and turns out I’m ahead with my payments whoot whoot. Only one more call to make.

Finally done with all the menial stuff. Time to get busy.

Whiteboard pens ordered, need to login to the corsair portal and check progress on that ticket.

Had a friend over for a while played a little doom4 and insurgency. Finally unlocked the BFG on doom, whoot! Hopefully not too far away from completing it on campaign mode.

Reading up on FSK (frequency shift keying) and POCSAG. Managed to get SDR# working with PDW and virtual cable for the first time. Now logging messages and noting frequencies for a tutorial.

Rendering vlog preparing to setup multimon-ng and rtl-fm.

Time for some sleeps.

Hakology Day 7 : Blog Entry

Good morning hakologists, the early bird gets the worm. Drinking coffee and slowly waking up might write show notes up from last night if I get time.

Well an interesting morning went carbooting, didn’t grab anything techy, just a few air tools, a tool box, a couple of books and its official hakology has a whiteboard!!!!OMG!

Time for a rest spent most of the afternoon catching up with an old friend. Lack of sleep is not good though.

Caffeine time.

Rendering VBLOG, watching deep digger dan.

Hakology Day 5 : Blog Entry

Nothing like a fresh coffee to start the day.

First tech support call to configure a printer, nice and easy start. Still have a DVD drive to repair and another person that wants some security advice but ill get on those next week. Time to start recording some stock footage and get editing.

Background noise.

Recharging cameras and having a brew.

Key-framing, key-framing, key-framing … and listening to a little drum and bass.

Pastebin for the steam controller install script.

Best analytics data to date …

Can you imagine the disappointment when whoever discovered it was a 3D printed leg for a dog.

More stock footage recorded just transferring the files and going to get back to editing and compiling.

Still editing and chopping stock footage, quite boring stuff but im making progress. Need to edit the audio in two locations and add a little more information but everything is coming together quite nicely. Then its Friday … game time and off to see a few friends, whoot. Planning a late night mumble if you want to join message me for the connection details, we’ll be hacking all the things.

LEEROY MOTHER F%$£ING JENKINS Its time to stop for a while and blast the s&%$ out of some evil demons on the computer!!! BOOM HEAD SHOT, BOOM HEAD SHOT, BOOM HEAD SHOT, BOOM HEAD SHOT. BOOM! HEAD! SHOT!

Well after a little gaming and a little sleep, I think its time for a coffee and some work. Then some more games hehe 🙂

So I’ve kind of finished the first edit, doing a quick VBLOG, then some serious gaming till the wee hours.

Hakology Day 4 : Blog Entry

Chores done and I’m online. Going to get busy, goals for today, get steam controller working on retro pie, re-record retropie audio, and re-render using better stock footage including steps to configuring. Then if I have any time get back on the SDR work.

Spent as much time working on retropie as I want for now. Just uploading WIP on the hakology VBLOG channel. Tea, food & SDRs.

Background noise.

Steam controller working in retropie … whoot.

Written an automated installation script. Finding bash in raspbian has some unusual defult settings regarding echo. If any one knows how to get echoes to display …

Testing and debugging script. Being a noob. Making silly mistakes. Correcting them. NTS: tput setaf 1; is a great way to set echo output in bash 🙂

Finished …. taking a break. – Managed to brick emulationstation in the process, now have to recover script and reimage.

Turns out if you boot the pi with a cronjob for the steam pad drivers it’ll crash emulationstation if you dont have the dongle inserted.

echo This script is designed intended for retro pie running raspbian and python 2.7
echo This script will now install the drivers and files required to use the steam controller with retropie

echo Update crontab …

echo Add the following to crontab …
echo @reboot /usr/local/bin/sc-xbox.py start
echo Ensure the steam usb dongle is inserted when you reboot otherwise emulationstation might not load.
echo If you need to run the script more than once besure to clean the udev rules found in:
echo /etc/udev/rules.d/99-steam-controller.rules
Will post a better a link to the file later when i’ve finished tinkering.

Random pic for the day, great tool all round esp when it comes to cabling new pc builds or finding that tiny screw you just dropped on the floor, cree LED with recharagable 18650s and adjustable focus.

Final retropie video posted to the hakology main youtube channel.

Signing off.

Hakology Day 3 : Blog Entry

Good morning hakologists, mental note go to bed earlier. Coffee time then on with some research think I’ve decided on doing a really boring video tonight we’ll see. I need more time to compile a decent SDR episode but may well do a little v-blogging today, need to get the garage sorted out. So glad to be back computering.

Now I’m more awake I’m going to have a look at setting up my SDR rig the question is under linux on an old dual core atom or under windows on an i5 …. urgh windows.

Major panic over located my SDR, time to get the environment setup and working … oh fun 🙂 will post some bonus twitter / WP content when I can get a decent picture of what I’m working on.

Tea break, have some defcon vids on in the background, looking for a little inspiration and mental refreshment, realised I wasnt following Balint Seeber @spenchdotnot … well I am now.

Well I’ve got the sdr working! Progress.

Taking a breather for a while, need to start noting frequencies and gathering some stock footage. So far my refresher today has taught my its gqrx for linux, sdr# for windows and rtl-sdr gets installed with gqrx, need to also sort out a ‘better’ antenna so much noise in my flat. Anyway …. break time.

Spent the last hour or so taking a ‘break’ scanning with the SDR made me remember how critical height and position are when transmitting / receiving RF. Also have the ALFA sitting next to my rig might do a little war driving for shits and giggles.

Social, doom4 and insurgency time.

So my social time over ran, lol, back to the grindstone.

As promised random bonus content for the blog. Here’s a picture of an old swiss army knife and yes its seen better days and is missing a few parts/utilities its a very special one. This was my dads, dads, pen knife who I never got to meet but my dad gave me this a few years ago, dug it out tidying the other day. Will try and keep posting one original picture every so often.

Really gone to town on the rpi retropie tutorial, signing off.
